What is an IP address?
An IP address, short for Internet Protocol address, is a numeric label your internet service provider assigns to your device. It works kind of like a home address, except it's for the internet, helping identify your device among billions of others online.
It's also how data actually finds its way to you. We type in website names like example.com because they're easy to remember, but computers don't work with words, only numbers. So behind the scenes, your device looks up the site's IP address (say, example.com translates to 103.86.98.1), uses it to locate the site on the web, and then loads it on your screen.
